PORT ANGELES — Jazz at the PUB will take center stage in the Pirate Union Building at Peninsula College on Tuesday afternoon.
The free admission concert starting at 12:30 p.m. will offer an opportunity to listen to the Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble in a casual atmosphere.
Community members are welcome to join college students lingering between classes for the performance in the Pirate Union Building, or J Building, at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.
Guests need not stray for lunch or coffee with the nearby PC Market & Deli.
The 17-piece Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of conductor David P. Jones, will play music by Jerome Kern, Count Basie, Thelonious Monk, Average White Band, Weather Report and the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
Robbin Eaves of Joyce and Olga Palenga of Port Angeles will sing tunes composed by or associated with Frank Sinatra, the Andrews Sisters, Woody Herman, Dinah Washington, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Dave Brubeck.
Jones also will premiere two of his recent compositions, as well as his arrangement of the now-classic fusion ballad “A Remark You Made” by Joe Zawinul.
In addition to Palenga, Bob Bailey (alto sax), Andy Geiger (tenor sax), Craig Buhler (tenor sax), Kelsey Cammack (baritone sax), WesLee Laughman (trumpet), Clare Wegener (euphonium, percussion and vocals), Ron Daylo (trombone) and Jones (keyboards/director) also call Port Angeles home.
From Sequim are Kate Powers (electric violin), Bonnie Booth (trombone), Reuben Moon (bass trombone) and Nicia Pfeffer (drums). John Adams (alto/soprano saxes) hails from Port Townsend, while Gerardo Reyes (euphonium) is from Forks. Bassist John Sanders lives in Quilcene and drummer Tor Brandes makes the journey all the way from Neah Bay.
The musical styles of the full band selections range from a song by Jerome Kern from the 1930s (“Pick Yourself Up” performed in a modern, cha-cha arrangement) to a couple of 1950s-era classics from the Basie Book to Thelonious Monk to several significant offerings of the rock/jazz fusion canon.
