PORT ANGELES — Peninsula College and the Port Angeles Racial Justice Collective are presenting Dream Week events to honor Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy.
The Dream Week Art Contest begins Monday and will extend through Friday.
Participants in “Joining Hands for Justice” are invited to “capture Dr. King’s legacy with art in any medium.”
Photos of short videos of artwork are to be sent to ASC@pencol.edu by 5 p.m. Friday.
Students are eligible for prizes: First place $50 gift card, second place $30, and third place $25.
Community and staff members are welcome to participate but with no prizes.
At 3:30 p.m. Wednesday will be a free Magic of Cinema film screening of the 2003 film, “Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin,” which follows Rustin’s 60-year career as an activist, organizer and “troublemaker.”
Rustin formulated many of the strategies that propelled the American civil rights movement.
“His passionate belief in Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolence drew King and other leaders to him in the 1940s and ’50s; his practice of those beliefs drew the attention of the FBI and police,” said organizers.
In 1963, Rustin brought his skills to the organization of the March on Washington, the biggest protest America had ever seen. His open homosexuality forced him to remain in the background, organizers said, marking him as a “brother outsider.”
Brother Outsider combines rare archival footage — some of it never before broadcast in the U.S. — with interviews to illuminate the life and work of a forgotten prophet of social change.
At about 5 p.m., following the film, will be a panel discussion with members of the Port Angeles Racial Justice Collective and Nitasha Lewis, Upward Bound coordinator at Peninsula College.
The Collective works to understand, unlearn, and dismantle racism and the institutions that perpetuate it, hold a safe space for community members, and uplift the voices of black, indigenous and people of color.

Wednesday’s film screening follows last Thursday’s Studium Generale at which Jeaninne Wallace presented “The Transformational Leadership of Bayard Rustin,” followed by a conversation with students and community members.
“Dream Week honors Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy, his emphasis on ‘remaining awake,’ and his lessons focused on the ‘three evils of society: racism, materialism, and militarism,’ college officials said in a press release.
“King’s urgent teachings are relevant today, and the college is committed to bringing educational opportunities to campus and the greater community.”
The special week was created in concert with The Associated Student Council (ASC), Magic of Cinema, House of Learning, PC Longhouse, and Studium Generale.
The Peninsula College Foundation is among the contributors.
