Pencil sketches of pilgrimage adorn walls of coffee shop

PORT ANGELES — Walking through The Blackbird Coffeehouse in November is like walking through the Camino de Santiago in black and white.

John Teichert’s pencil sketches of his pilgrimage adorn the walls of the coffee shop at 336 E. Eighth St. through the end of November.

The Camino de Santiago, known in English as The Way of Saint James, comprises a network of pilgrimages leading to the shrine of the apostle Saint James in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain.

Teichert began his pilgrimage journey in 2014 and has returned each of the past three years. Trained as an architect, the show reflects his connection with the history and shapes along the Camino, according to a news release.

Teichert wrote in a news release that he hopes to encourage the viewer to take his or her own pilgrimage.

“It begins as soon as you walk out of your front door and continues with each step and pilgrim you meet.”
