PC Jazz Ensemble to perform Tuesday in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Professor David P. Jones will direct the Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble Fall Quarter Concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The free concert will be in Maier hall on the Peninsula College campus at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

Robbin Eaves of Joyce will essay Kurt Weill’s classic, “September Song,” as well as the 1960s R&B hit by Bobby Webb, “Sunny.”

Olga Palenga of Port Angeles will sing “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes,” which was featured in the 1950 animated Disney movie “Cinderella” as well as the live action version in 2014, and the Tommy Dorsey hit, “Lamp is Low” which was adapted from a piano piece by Maurice Ravel.

The 15-piece PC Jazz Ensemble will add instrumentals by Duke Ellington (“Cottontail” and “I Got It Bad”), Sonny Rollins (“Oleo”), Wayne Shorter (“El Gaucho”) and others, including two original compositions by Jones.

The group is currently a large jazz big band with a violin, flute, clarinet, four saxes, trumpet, euphonium, two trombones and a rhythm section.

The performers are from throughout the North Olympic Peninsula.

In addition to Eaves and Palenga, members are, Bob Bailey (alto sax), Kevin MacCartney (tenor sax/flute), Richard “Doc” Thorson (tenor sax), Heidi Fivash (piano/keyboards), and Jones (keyboards/director) all of Port Angeles; Kate Powers (violin), Scott Sizer (trumpet), Jeff Dingle (trombone), and Nicia Pfeffer (drums) all of Sequim; John Adams (alto sax/bass clarinet) of Port Townsend; Ron Daylo (trombone) of Port Ludlow; Gerardo Reyes (euphonium) of Forks; bassist John Sanders lives in Quilcene; and one drummer, Tor Brandes, makes the trek all the way from out near Brinnon.
