Outdoor music returns to Marrowstone Island

Saturday evening shows include jazz, blues

NORDLAND — Live music has returned to Marrowstone Vineyards, the winery at 423 Meade Road, every Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and there’s no entry fee to the outdoor venue.

“It was so good to see everybody. People are so happy to be out,” Taylor Mermel, Marrowstone’s tasting room manager, said of the summer series that began last Saturday.

“We’ve set up our stage out in the field, so everybody has a lot of space to spread out and have a view,” she said, adding people are encouraged to bring picnics and lawn chairs.

Musicians are coming from Port Townsend, Seattle and Marrowstone Island itself, she said.

On Grateful Dead night July 31, the winery will present a stream of the Dead’s May 9, 1977, concert; the Buffalo, N.Y., Memorial Auditorium show is considered one of the band’s greatest.

“We have a wine club member who’s a huge fan and is putting it on,” Mermel said.

Local wines and sparkling water will be available for purchase during the Saturday evening events, but she’s had a little trouble booking food trucks for them.

“We’re looking for food vendors,” Mermel said; the winery can be reached at 360-385-9608 and via marrowstonevineyards.com.

There are a couple of Saturdays when weddings are planned at the winery, so those don’t have concerts slated, she added. Here’s the lineup of shows for the rest of the summer.

• Saturday: The Shaky Barbers play “original music from a Hawaiian and Russian wedding held in Kentucky,” according to bandleader Douglas Francisco.

• July 3: The Big Hands Colvin Band mixes blues, country and soul.

• July 10: The Jack Dwyer Trio offers folk originals and covers.

• July 17: The Daniel Rapport Trio stirs up blues, rock, funk and surf music.

• July 24: Guitarist Joe Euro plays neoclassical and other genres.

• July 31: Grateful Dead Night presents a streamed Dead concert from 1977.

• Aug. 7: Cellist Sage Coy and violinist Marina Rosenquist appear.

• Aug. 14: The Caribe steel-pan band mixes tropical music and pop.

• Aug. 21: Guitarist Brian Douglas plays jazz and originals.

• Sept. 11: Kelly Carpenter plays, featuring his album “Glass Full of Summer.”

• Sept. 18: Camelia Jade and Sage Coy mix guitar and cello.
