Olympic Music Festival features musicians for gala

PORT TOWNSEND — Musicians from GardenMusic will return for the fifth year to the Olympic Music Festival this weekend, performing Saturday and Sunday at the Northwest Maritime Center.

Tickets for the Olympic Music Festival’s Midsummer Gala at the maritime center at 431 Water St. are $60. Tickets for Saturday are sold out, and a limited number are available for Sunday.

The concert will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

A post-concert reception is planned immediately after the concert for attendees to mingle with the artists.

Tickets are on sale at olympicmusicfestival.org and by phone at Brown Paper Tickets, 800-838-3006.

Olympic Music Festival (OMF) performances will continue at Fort Worden on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 with Chamber Music Masters at the Wheeler Theater, and on Sept. 7-8 for the season finale with Ray Chen and Julio Elizalde in recital.

Led by veteran festival artist Teddy Abrams, Musicians from GardenMusic is a group of versatile artists who perform classical works as well as new compositions, jazz and world music, according to a news release.

The program both days will feature Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” with other works to be announced from the stage.

Teddy Abrams will play keyboards and clarinet, and is joined by Mark Dover on clarinet, Gabriel Globus-Hoenich on percussion, Michael Thurber on double bass and vocals, and OMF Artistic Director Julio Elizalde on keyboards.

Abrams

Abrams is the music director of the Louisville Orchestra and music director and conductor of the Britt Orchestra, as well as an established pianist, clarinetist, and composer.

He continues to foster interdisciplinary collaboration with organizations including the Louisville Ballet, the Center for Interfaith Relations, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Speed Art Museum and the Folger Shakespeare Library.

His 2017-18 season included debuts with the Los Angeles, Malaysian, and Rhode Island philharmonics; the Milwaukee, Fort Worth, Princeton, and Omaha symphonies; and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. Recent guest conducting highlights include engagements with the San Francisco, Houston, Vancouver, Colorado, and Phoenix symphonies; Florida Orchestra; the Louisiana and New Mexico philharmonics; and at the Kennedy Center.

Dover

In January 2016, Dover joined Grammy-nominated wind quintet Imani Winds. As both part of Imani Winds and as a featured artist, Dover has collaborated with pianists Gil Kalish, Fabio Bidini, Jon Nakamatsu, and Alpin Hong; violinists Caroline Goulding, Alexi Kenney and Francesca de Pasquale; and cellist Brook Speltz of the Escher String Quartet.

Globus-Hoenich

Globus-Hoenich, a Montreal native, is a New York City-based drummer, percussionist, composer and teaching artist whose career reflects a love for the worlds of jazz, classical music and world music.

Globus-Hoenich performs frequently with some of the top players in Latin music, including John Benitez, Axel Laugart and Luisito Quintero.

Globus-Hoenich has performed with a multitude of jazz greats, and has been featured on drum set with the Philly Pops, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony and Louisville Orchestra, among others.

Thurber

Composer Michael Thurber’s musical career “defies categorization,” organizers said.

“From composing for The Royal Shakespeare Company and co-founding the smash YouTube channel CDZA, to creating his Thurber Theater variety show at Joe’s Pub, teaching at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute, and performing in the house band on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert as well as around the country in duo with violinist Tessa Lark, Thurber’s musical journey has been remarkably singular.”

Thurber made his international debut with his score of “Antony and Cleopatra,” a co-production between the Royal Shakespeare Company (Stratford, UK) and The Public Theater directed by Oscar winner Tarell McCraney.

Elizalde

Pianist Elizalde has served as the artistic director of the Olympic Music Festival since 2014.

Praised as a musician of “compelling artistry and power” by The Seattle Times, he is a multi-faceted artist whose career includes performing as a soloist and chamber musician, and serving as an artistic administrator, educator and curator.

He has performed in many of the major music centers throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and Latin America.
