Olympic Music Festival concerts this weekend

PORT TOWNSEND — The Olympic Music Festival will present two programs this weekend at the Wheeler Theater in Fort Worden.

Romantic Frontiers will take place on Saturday and Visionary Women on Sunday. Doors will open at 1:15 p.m. for seating, and the concerts will begin at 2 p.m.

All seats are $40. Youth ages 7-12 are free when accompanied by an adult. Student and group rates are also available. Call 360-385-9699 for ticket availability and weekend information or visit www.olympicmusic festival.org.

The Olympic Music Festival began its 40th season Aug. 12 with performances on weekends through Sept. 10.

Pianist Robert Carlson is one of the five fellows who will be performing in concert during the Olympic Chamber Music Fellowship. Considered one of the best training programs in the country, the fellowship serves as a critical link for young artists making the transition from student to professional.

Cellist Carlo Lay is a laureate of national and international competitions such as the Flame Competition in Paris and the Beethoven Bonnensis competition, and he won the sponsorship award at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival.

Violist Laura Liu, a native of Miami, Fla., studies with Cynthia Phelps and Misha Amory at the Juilliard School. This season, she competed as a semifinalist in the third Oskar Nedbal International Viola Competition where she received an Honorary Mention and the Pirastro Prize for outstanding young talent.

Twenty-one-year-old violinist Clara Neubauer attends the Juilliard School as a proud recipient of the Kovner Fellowship in the studios of Itzhak Perlman and Li Lin. Coming from a family of professional musicians, Neubauer grew up playing chamber music with her older brother, parents and cousins and credits them with planting the seed for her love of chamber music.

Violinist Jason Moon studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and at the Juilliard School, where he was taught by Li Lin, and has performed as a soloist with the San Francisco and Peninsula Symphony Orchestras, among others.
