Northwinds Homeschool Band to perform Tuesday

PORT ANGELES — The Northwinds Homeschool Concert and Jazz Bands will perform Tuesday.

The concert will start at 7 p.m. at Independent Bible Church, 116 E. Ahlvers Road.

Admission to the concert, which is open to the public, is free. A reception will follow the performance.

Led by director Dan Tutton, the evening will include music from five ensembles, with Latin and swing jazz tunes, as well as songs composed by Elliot Del Borgo, who wrote music for the 1980 Lake Placid Olympic Games.

The Jazz Band placed first in the 1-A Division at the Clark College Jazz Festival in January.

The group competed against both public and private school students at the Vancouver, Wash., festival.

In addition to being awarded first place, Northwinds trombonist Jared Fodge and trumpet player Adam Kennedy were awarded Outstanding Musician Awards for their respective instrumental solos.

Northwinds Jazz and Concert Bands participated in the Anaheim Heritage Festival in 2014, where they received two gold awards, one silver award, two maestro awards and the “Spirit of Anaheim” award given to the high school group that best represented its community.

Later this month, the ensembles will travel again to the Los Angeles area for a Heritage Festival and a Festival of Gold invitation-only event.

Travel will include multiple performances, a recording session at Disneyland and a competition with schools from around the nation.

Performance locations will include Disneyland and the Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

The Northwinds Band is composed of more than 70 private and home-schooled students from the Port Angeles and Sequim areas.
