Northwinds Homeschool Band to perform in PA

PORT ANGELES — The Northwinds Homeschool Band will host its Winter Concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The free concert — the first community concert of the year for the band — will be at Independent Bible Church, 116 E. Ahlvers Road.

All five bands will perform.

Free-will donations will be accepted at a reception following the performance, said Ann Marie Henninger, board member.

The Northwinds band is raising funds for a trip to Los Angeles in March, she said.

The band will participate at a variety of venues: WorldStrides Heritage Festival, WorldStrides Festival of Gold, Disney Recording Studio Session and performances at Disneyland and California Adventure Theme Parks.

The program, directed by Dan Tutton, is comprised of more than 80 student musicians, ranging in age from 8 to 18. The band offers five bands-within-a-band, including Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced, Jazz 1 and Jazz 2 bands.

Northwinds Homeschool Band is a nonprofit band program that offers musical instruction and development to students from 9 to 19 years of age.

The program has been in existence for 16 years and has trained more than 200 musicians.

It has won numerous awards — in January, the Jazz 1 band won second place at the Clark College Jazz Festival in Vancouver, Wash.

The ensemble has performed more than 100 times, locally and nationally.

The band meets twice weekly for practice and offers public concerts semi-annually, in addition to attending competitions regularly throughout the year.
