Northwind event to focus on the art of collaboration

PORT TOWNSEND — The Northwind Reading Series will present a collaborative arts group, The Roadstead Project, at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The suggested donation for admission is $5 at Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water St.

All proceeds will support the center.

The Roadstead Project was inspired two years ago by “Poems Inspired,” where visual artists responded to a juried show of poetry at Northwinds.

Sarah Zale, Jim Murphy, and Terry Persun proposed to over 30 artists from various genres to commit to a minimum of one year in artistic collaboration.

According to a news release, all the artists agreed on the purpose of the project: first, to explore their process rather than focus on a final product; and second, to keep alive the question: What are all the possibilities for collaboration?

They found these objectives both exciting but risky, organizers said.

As a result, they named their project for the place it was founded, Port Townsend, a roadstead — a safe harbor near the sea for ships to gather.

The artists work in three groups, named to reflect their mission or culture: Running Dogs, Spot On and Tiny Life.

The Running Dogs are Randy Arnest, Leticia Huber, Jay Haskins, Alison Hedlund, Kelly Matlock, Jim Murphy, Terry Persun, Mark Valentine and Sarah Zale.

Spot On is Sheila Bender, Sharon Carter, Gayle Kaune and Linda Robertson.

Tiny Life is Laura Alisanne and Kate Reavey.

The Roadstead artists invite everyone to come not only as spectators but as participants in artistic collaboration in the creation of new work.
