Northwind Art School offers classes

PORT TOWNSEND — A full slate of new art workshops and courses — for youngsters and adults — is being rolled out at Northwind Art School at Fort Worden State Park.

The nonprofit school, formerly the Port Townsend School of the Arts, calls this the “summer catalog refresh.”

Information about all of its classes and teaching artists can be found at https://northwindart.org.

Among the offerings:

• Floral Design + Still Life for Autumn, Oct. 1;

• Intro to Zine Making: The Art of Informal Publishing Oct. 9, 16 and 23;

• Your Story/Their Story: Using Lived Experiences to Create Art, Thursdays Sept. 28-Nov. 2;

• Collaborative Abstract Painting with Your pARTner, Oct. 7;

• Mixed Media Collage, Oct. 24-25;

• Steel and Mixed Material Mobiles, Nov. 10-12;

• Weave-Along and Conversation with Tininha, Nov. 17;

• Adult & Child Art with Heart, Dec. 9;

• Online Art + Critique series starting Jan. 25.

Also starting this fall: new workshops for photographers. The York & Goodman Photography Series, organized by local artists Rick York and Brian Goodman, offers a variety of hands-on classes for teenagers and adults.

“The series gives photographers a chance to stretch, and reimagine how they use their cameras to capture the world,” said Northwind Art communications manager Diane Urbani.

Participants who take four or more York & Goodman Photo Series classes will have an exhibiting opportunity. In early 2024, they will be invited to show a selection of their work at Northwind Art’s Jeanette Best Gallery in Port Townsend.

“Whether you are a beginning artist or very experienced, we offer new adventures,” Urbani said. “Taking an art class is a wonderful way to relieve stress,” she added, “and explore something new.”

For teens, Northwind Art continues to offer the Bunker, a free art studio open to middle and high school students.

Hosted by professional artists, the Bunker happens on alternating Fridays at Northwind Art School’s well-stocked classroom. Supplies and snacks are provided.

Dates and permission forms for the Bunker can be found on the https://northwindart.org Courses page.
