Northwest Women’s Chorale to host holiday concert

PORT ANGELES — The Northwest Women’s Chorale will present “Coming Together for the Holidays” at 7 p.m. Monday.

The Christmas concert will be at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 Lopez St., Port Angeles.

Admission is a $20 donation at the door.

The program will begin with “Ave Maria” by Franz Biebl followed by “Comfort, Comfort Now My People.”

Then several soloists will be showcased in Abbie Betinis’ “In the Bleak Midwinter.”

The program also will include several foreign-language carols such as “A la Media Noche” (At Midnight), a traditional Puerto Rican carol sung in Spanish; “Elohai N’tzor,” sung in Hebrew; James McCullough’s arrangement of “Look at Sweet Mary’s Baby,” an African American spiritual; and “Solveig’s Song” from Edward Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite, sung in the original Norwegian.

The show will continue with “There Was a Pig Went Out to Dig” by Percy Grainger; “Saint Nicholas Song,” a traditional German holiday song; the traditional “Ukrainian Bell Carol;” and “Pie Carols.”

The repertoire consistently spans songs from the 16th century to contemporary composers; this time having a bit of fun with Christmas carols, a lively Spanish number, a meditation based on a traditional Hebrew text and a Norwegian song by Edvard Grieg.

The concert also will include a sing-along in the middle of the program and accompaniment by flutist Sharon Snel and pianist Kristin Quigley Brye.
