New Zealand folk singer, songwriter to perform in Coyle

COYLE — Award-winning singer-songwriter Mel Parsons will perform at 7:30 p.m. Sunday as part of the Concerts in the Woods series.

The concert will take place at the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center, 923 Hazel Point Road. It is on a Sunday instead of its usual Saturday because of the three-day weekend.

Admission is by donation. Complimentary cookies and coffee are served at intermission to guests.

“We are very lucky to have Mel Parsons make a stop in Coyle on her very limited North American tour this year,” said Norm Johnson, organizer of the concert series.

“Mel is a fantastic songwriter, singer and guitarist who has created some of the most beautiful folk music in her home country of New Zealand and around the world.”

Parsons has just released her third full-length album “Drylands” and has just returned from a a 23-date headline tour of New Zealand.

The release follows the success of both her debut album “Over My Shoulder” in 2009 and sophomore offering “Red Grey Blue” in 2011.

Parsons is a two-time New Zealand Country Music Award (NCZMA) finalist for Folk Album of the Year; Winner of the 2016 NZCMA Country Song of the Year; Winner of the 2016 Music Managers Forum (MMF) award for Best Independent Tour; a finalist for the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) Silver Scroll award in 2015; and “Drylands” won the New Zealand Music Award in technical category for Best Engineer (Lee Prebble, Oliver Harmer).

The Laurel B. Johnson Community Center is a wood and glass structure with wonderful acoustics, Johnson said. The room has seating for more than 65 people.
