New talent featured at July variety show

SEQUIM — Your Community Variety Show, the monthly two-hour program of live local entertainment at the Sequim Prairie Grange, will present some new talent Tuesday.

The free, two-hour show starts at 6:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of every month at the grange hall at 290 Macleay Road.

Joe Schipani, a recent transplant to the North Olympic Peninsula, has performed at two local “open mic” events but will make his local stage debut at the variety show.

“Who’d have thought,” he said, “that an Italian from New Jersey would play the accordion?”

Michael Bunnell, host of the program, added that it’s not an ordinary accordion but rather an electronic instrument. Like the electronic wind instrument played by saxophone veteran Dave Keyte, Schipani’s accordion mimics dozens of different instrument sounds.

“I’d love to get those two guys together,” Bunnell said.

Another performer new to the variety show is author and thespian Patrick Casteneda, who will provide a reading of an original work.

Also on the program is what Bunnell calls “a sort-of new act” which will be new to most of the audience. Diane and Mike Johnson will perform some of the songs they did together before they teamed up with Rodger Bigelow and Keyte to form Buttercup Lane.

Your Community Variety Show is a gift to the Peninsula from two Sequim businesses: Skookum Bay Productions (a division of Skookum Bay Publishing) and Joyful Noise Music Center.

Information about attending or appearing on the show is available by email at sbayprod@olypen.com or by phone at 360-681-2686.
