New Port Angeles calisthenics park celebrated Saturday

PORT ANGELES — An all-day grand opening of the Erickson Calisthenics Park is planned from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The event will celebrate those who contributed money and time in the project, said Jesse Banks, who helped organize the initiative, in a press release.

The calisthenics park is located on city-owned property at the intersection of South Francis and East Fourth streets, just northwest of the Erickson Playfield tennis court.

The day will feature a yoga session in the morning, food carts and street vendors, entertainment with a DJ and an opening ceremony to thank those who helped.

A special highlight will be a calisthenics workout competition with these exercises: pushups, pullups, chin-ups, dips, assisted handstands and a final team tug of war.

Calisthenics is the practice of using body weight for strength training.

The community grass-roots project to build the calisthenics park was started in 2015 with the goal of providing a place at Erickson Playfield for people to work out, train, practice and reap the benefits of calisthenics as a part of staying healthy.

In August of 2016, the first two phases were completed: the training stations and the safety/instructional signage.

The third phase will be completed this week with the final installation of special flooring and equipment adjustments.
