Naturalist to talk on whales at Nash’s Farm Store on Saturday

SEQUIM — Naturalist Fred Sharpe will talk about celebrating the humpback whale at 11 a.m. Saturday at Nash’s Farm Store, 4681 Sequim-Dungeness Way.

The talk is free and open to the public.

Sharpe will talk about an exploration of the humpback whale and its global recovery.

He will explore their unique bubble-netting behavior, characterized by enduring friendships, tool use, task specialization and complex, undeciphered sounds, according to a news release.

Updates on health vigilance utilizing drones and the rescue of entangled individuals will be covered.

Sharpe will also briefly discuss the ecological restoration of the Sequim Prairie.

Sharpe is is co-author and illustrator of “Wild Plants of the San Juan Islands,” “Birding in the San Juan Islands” and “Voyaging with the Whales.”

He earned his doctorate in animal behavior at Simon Fraser University and his bachelor of science in plant ecology from the University of Washington.

His interests include the connection between Native American land use practices and the conservation of wildlife in prairie communities.

Sharpe is also a board member, research biologist and principal investigator with the Alaska Whale Foundation, and he studies the social behavior and conservation of humpback whales in Alaska and Hawaii.
