PORT ANGELES — The third annual Native American Culture Fair, “Honoring Our Medicine,” will focus on traditional plants and medicines from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday.
The free culture fair will be in the Pirate Union Building at Peninsula College’s Port Angeles campus, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.
Youths will lead the program, which is a collaborative effort among the House of Learning Longhouse, Port Angeles High School’s Native American programs, the Elwha Youth Coalition, the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, the Makah Tribe and other tribal partners.
The Culture Fair began in 2015 in an effort to spotlight the voices of youths and provide the opportunity for students to educate the college campus and community about tribal history, language and traditions.
Workshops have included college experience activities in which students toured specialized areas of the Peninsula College campus and learned about academic and professional programs.
In the workshops, guest artists guide students on projects such as painting, carving, weaving and beadwork.
Students worked for five weeks before the fair on the creation of a Coast Salish button blanket, which was gifted to the college and is permanently displayed in the longhouse.
