Nathaniel Talbot Trio to play at Rainshadow Recording on Friday

PORT TOWNSEND — The Nathaniel Talbot Trio will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The concert will be in the studio at Rainshadow Recording, Building 315 on Fort Worden, 315 Artillery Hill Drive.

Tickets are $20 per person at www.ticketstorm.com/e/29639/t or $25 at the door.

Singer-songwriter Timothy Hull will open for the trio.

Originally from Oregon, Talbot is a farmer who runs a vegetable farm and seed company on Whidbey Island.

“Working in agriculture, while often physically and emotionally tiring, also provides the mental space and quietude for songs to be sown and nourished,” Talbot said. “The natural setting imprinted on my sense of self, and populated my brain with the imagery and storylines that would later manifest in my songwriting.”

The singer-songwriter credits influence of the guitar-driven sounds of Kelly Joe Phelps, Elliott Smith and Bill Frisell in shaping his music.

Talbot often performs as a duo with Keegan Harshman on upright bass or, with the addition of Owen Thayer on pedal steel and electric guitar, as an electric trio.

Talbot’s music has dirt under its fingernails, the product of decades of hard work re-tuning, replanting and retelling.

The result is American roots music that combines an edge of tradition with the Pacific Northwest’s legacy of freedom and innovation.
