Monday Musicale’s annual Scholarship Benefit Concert set for Sunday

PORT ANGELES — A local program with a 50-year history and heart for local young musicians, the Monday Musicale group is preparing another fundraising concert this fall for its scholarships.

The annual Scholarship Benefit Concert is set for 2 p.m. Sunday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 201 E. Lopez Ave., with a quartet of local artists/groups scheduled to perform.

Tickets are available at Forage Gifts and NW Treasures, 121 W. Washington St., Sequim, or at Port Book and News, 104 E. First St., Port Angeles.

They also will sell for $15 and $20 at the door.

Show lineup

The lineup includes Sequim’s Linda Dowdell, a jazz pianist with roots in both jazz and classical music.

Also taking the stage are the trio Lyrica, the Jimmy Hoffman Band and the Grand Olympics Chorus.

Trio Lyrica includes violinist Kate Southard-Dean of Sequim, who was alternately assistant concertmaster and concertmaster of the Port Angeles Symphony and Chamber Orchestra 1988-2014; pianist Kristin Quigley Byre, an adjunct professor of music at Peninsula College, and collaborative pianist with Northwest Women’s Chorale and owner of a private studio in Port Angeles; and cellist Marlene Moore, who has been playing cello since age 3 and is a member of Port Angeles Symphony Orchestra.

The Jimmy Hoffman Band features Hoffman, a longtime Joyce resident who once was a Monday Musicale scholarship winner and whose band plays at numerous local venues including 7 Cedars Casino and the Concert at the Pier series in Port Angeles.

Since 1981, the Olympics Chorus has performed at community events as well as being a part of Sweet Adeline’s International, an international women’s organization of nearly 21,000 members dedicated to advancing the unique sound of a cappella barbershop harmony.

Tradition

Formed 52 years ago, Monday Musicale is an organization dedicated to providing scholarships to local high school seniors who are seeking a career in music.

Members meet once a month for a noon meeting on the third Monday of the month at the Queen of Angels Catholic Church Fellowship Hall, 209 W. 11th St., Port Angeles.

After the meeting, local performers share their music.

Membership is $15 a year and proceeds go toward the scholarships.

The group has a fundraiser once a year to fund the scholarships.

Monday Musicale has awarded more than 175 scholarships totaling more than $156,000.
