Moby Dick event set for this weekend

PORT ANGELES — The Moby Dick Extravaganza is set for this weekend in Port Angeles.

The annual event at Studio Bob, 118½ E. Front St., will celebrate the novel and things related to the story.

The celebration will kick off with a free screening of “In the Heart of the Sea” at 7 p.m. Friday. A clam chowder dinner is available for purchase starting at 6 p.m.

The 2015 historical drama is about the sinking of the American whaling ship Essex in 1820, an event that partly inspired Herman Melville to write “Moby-Dick.”

The extravaganza will include crafts in the Sunshine Room, including rock painting, T-shirt making and whale origami, and a marine life pop-up art sale all day on Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday, there will be a series of presentations. The schedule includes:

• Feiro Marine Life Center staff will present “Whales and other Marine Mammals” at 10 a.m.

• Marcus, from Mark’s Body Art, will present “Tattoos: Their history and significance in 18th and 19th century sailing” at 11:30 a.m.

• Mark Valentine will present “Moby Dictatorship? Ahab and Authoritarian Regimes” at 1 p.m.

• Cribbage from noon to 4 p.m.

• Dramatic readings from “Moby-Dick” from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Saturday will finish with “A Naughty Nautical Drag and Burlesque Show,” an evening of beginner/amateur burlesque and drag, at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $10 at www.studiobob.art.

Proceeds will help fund the weekend’s events.

Sunday will offer more presentations:

• Chelsea Rider will present “Whales vs. whales vs. Boats” at 10 a.m.

• Richard Stephens will present “Dining on Deck: Food rations on 19th century ships” at 11:30 a.m.

• The Starbuck Show, starring First Mate Starbuck with special guests Mrs. Starbuck and Carl Jung at 1 p.m.

• More cribbage from noon to 4 p.m.

• Sea Shanties featuring Northstar, The Bohemians and more, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

• At 4 p.m., the extravaganza will close with a free screening of “Moby Dick.”

Event organizers state that the 2010 remake, set in modern day, “is so bad, it’s great!”
