Merchants tapped to display student art

PORT TOWNSEND — Friday is the deadline for merchants to sign up to showcase student art for Art Wave.

The artwork, created by Port Townsend School District students in grades K-12, is an annual exhibit that will go up during the month of May for display in uptown and downtown merchant windows.

“Art Wave” celebrates children’s creative expression through art and is a collaboration between PT Artscape and participating Port Townsend businesses.

Funds raised will help support diverse offerings by PT Artscape including the Teaching Artists Programs at Salish Coast Elementary, Blue Heron Middle School, and Port Townsend High School, as well as professional development for teaching artists and classroom teachers.

“There is a great selection of art to display this year,” organizers said.

Merchants who would want to display art in May can contact admin@ptmainstreet.org. Art Wave is free for current Port Townsend Main Street members and $15 for non-members.

PT Artscape is in its 25th year of providing visual and dramatic arts in the Port Townsend schools, grades K-12.

Consortium programs integrate the arts into regular classrooms, helping teachers enhance their curriculum through the arts, expanding student access to and experience with the arts, and providing instruction and mentoring to artists who wish to teach their art.

The Port Townsend School District is the lead agency for the Consortium activities, which are funded through a grant from the Washington State Arts Commission.

PT Artscape also supports Centrum’s Tales, Texts and Theater Program for the sixth grade, as well as special projects and the purchase of art supplies for students.
