Men’s chorale group seeks new members

PORT HADLOCK — Singers in the Rain, a men’s chorale group, is seeking new voices.

Hazel Johnson, music director, and Sydney Keegan, vocal instructor, are looking for men of all ages, voice types and levels of ability to join Singers in the Rain for its 2019-20 season.

Now in its 10th year, Singers in the Rain combines weekly training in vocal and sight-reading skills with preparation for its annual April concert at Trinity United Methodist in Port Townsend. Other performance opportunities can be expected during the September to May season, and concerts include opportunities for soloists as well as the full ensemble.

Repertoire choices range from opera choruses and other serious works to sacred music, musical theater, popular favorites, spirituals and barbershop.

This season’s concert will feature the famous Ghost Scene from Act II of Gilbert & Sullivan’s Ruddigore, a send-up of stage melodramas of the early Victorian era.

There is no entrance audition requirement. Those interested in joining are asked to make an appointment with Keegan so she can assess your voice type and decide what section fits you best.

All ages are welcome, from teens to seniors.

“We especially want to encourage younger singers who would like to continue developing the skills acquired in high-school and college ensembles,” organizers said.

Rehearsals are from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays at the Community United Methodist Church in Port Hadlock, just south of the business intersection.

Monthly tuition is $50. It “includes all the extra help you need in order to succeed, including addition one-on-one voice coaching with Sydney and Monday afternoon extra sight-reading sessions with Hazel. Scholarship assistance is available,” organizers said.

Those interested can call Keegan at 360-379-4735 or Johnson at 360-385-6000.
