‘Meet Me at the Gallery’ class in Port Townsend

PORT TOWNSEND — The “Burst of Color” art exhibition will be freshly installed — and to explore it all, an equally new class will take place Tuesday at Northwind Art’s Jeanette Best Gallery.

It’s called “Meet Me at the Gallery: Creativity in Response to Art,” with teaching artist Dana Weir. She’ll guide participants — including teenagers and adults — through the show from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

“Not only is this a chance to engage with a vibrant art show, but it’s also an opportunity to make your own art book in response,” said Northwind communications manager Diane Urbani.

First, “Meet Me” participants will spend time in the exhibit spaces, getting curious and engaging with the current show, Weir said. She’ll encourage the discussion, honoring each person’s views.

Then, “as a way of documenting their experiences and responding to the exhibit, students will create a simple, accordion-style book,” Weir said, adding that she’ll demonstrate various techniques for this process. Bookmaking materials range from calligraphy ink and watercolor pens to rubber stamps and paper collage.

The “Meet Me” course fee is $40 while a $10 materials fee covers all of the art supplies. Information and signup are available at https://north windart.org. The nonprofit Northwind Art School, based at Fort Worden, will offer “Meet Me” at Jeanette Best Gallery, 701 Water St.

“This is an approach that centers student voices, inquiry and self expression,” noted Weir, who has taught art at Port Townsend’s Swan School, at the Benji Project and with the Jefferson Clemente Course. She has also led youth camps at Northwind Art School and exhibited her own art around the Northwest.
