Matheny to perform with trio in Sequim

SEQUIM — Award-winning flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny will bring his Jazz Noir trio to Wind Rose Cellars for a free concert Saturday.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. at the business at 143 W.Washington St.

Matheny, who presents more than 200 concerts on tour each year, will appear with Seattle musicians jazz guitarist Milo Petersen and bassist Phil Sparks.

Voted “NW Instrumentalist of the Year” in the recent Seattle Earshot Jazz Awards, Matheny was described by the International Review of Music as “one of the most emotionally expressive improvisers of his generation.”

The San Francisco Chronicle called him “one of the jazz world’s most talented horn players.”

An honors graduate of Berklee College of Music, Matheny vaulted onto the jazz scene in the 1990s as the protégé of jazz legend Art Farmer.

Since then he has garnered an international following, releasing 11 CDs, touring extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.
