Master Gardener talk to focus on berries Thursday

PORT ANGELES — Veteran Master Gardener Jeanette Stehr-Green will provide tips for establishing a more productive berry patch at noon Thursday.

The free lecture will be in the county commissioners’ meeting room (Room 160) of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St. Attendees may bring a lunch.

Stehr-Green will explain the growth habits and requirements of raspberries and blackberries.

She will describe the life cycle of a cane berry, the ideal planting site for raspberries and blackberries and how to prune and trellis cane berries to improve the health of the berry crop.

She also will describe the general types of raspberries and blackberries and how to select those most appropriate for a home garden space and their desired use.

A Clallam County Master Gardener since 2003, Stehr-Green writes gardening articles for local media.

She is a berry enthusiast and has been growing raspberries and blackberries on the North Olympic Peninsula for more than 15 years.

Stehr-Green enjoys growing, picking and eating berries and teaching others about growing them.

The “Green Thumb Garden Tips” brown bag series, sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners on the second and fourth Thursday of every month in Port Angeles, consists of educational programs designed to help home gardeners establish or improve their gardening practices.
