Mary Fahl to perform year’s final Concert in the Woods

COYLE — Mary Fahl, formerly of the October Project, will perform at 2023’s last Concerts in the Woods on Dec. 2 after being interviewed live on KPTZ on Sunday.

“Concerts in the Woods could not find a more fabulous artist to bring our amazing 2023 series to a beautiful close on Saturday, Dec. 2nd,” said host Joe McKinstry, in a press release.

Fahl will sing from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 2 at Laurel B. Johnson Community Center, 923 Hazel Point Road Coyle,.

Admission is by donation only, suggested to be $20.

“This will be the first time that Mary has ever played out here on the Olympic Peninsula.” McKinstry said in the release.

Phil Andrus of KPTZ will interview her at 7 p.m. this Sunday on his show “Cats in our Laps,” McKinstry said.

Described by The Boston Globe as having “a voice for the gods that can transport listeners to other realms.”Fahl, a singer/songwriter, first achieved fame as lead singer and co-founder of the mid-1990s NYC- based chamber-pop group October Project.

After two records on Epic, the band disbanded, and Fahl went on to write and record songs for movies such as the theme for the Civil War epic “Gods and Generals;” sang arias and medieval Spanish songs for Sony Classical and released and album, “Dark Side of the Moon.”

Her latest CD, “Can’t Get It Out of My Head,” is a collection of other artists’ music, songs that got her attention early in her life, helping her find her own musical path in the process.

Said Fahl of the new record: “On top of all the madness that was happening in the world, I was grappling with the loss of my mother and sister this past year and was feeling completely rootless. These were such essential songs for me… like old friends… my musical home in many ways.”

Fahl’s show is planned to be a combination of original material, including songs from her October Project days, some covers, and renditions of a few holiday-themed gems as well, McKinstry said.

The 2024 Concerts in the Woods series will begin at the end of January.
