Marine Science Center to host book signing Saturday

PORT TOWNSEND — Joe Gaydos, co-author of the recently released “Explore the Salish Sea, A Nature Guide for Kids,” will be at the Port Townsend Marine Science Center for a book signing and family event from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

The program and beach walk are free with paid admission to the marine science center on a first-come, first-served basis.

Adults are admitted for $5; the fee for youth is $3.

Children younger than 6 and marine science center members are admitted free.

Space is limited and reservations are encouraged. RSVP to https://goo.gl/forms/SqAqTsE1aJ8Ir21a2.

The wildlife veterinarian and chief scientist for the SeaDoc Society will give a presentation for children 8 and older in the Orca Exhibit classroom before leading a beach walk at Fort Worden State Park.

“When I think of the Port Townsend Marine Science Center’s mission to inspire conservation of the Salish Sea, I can think of no better spokesperson than Joe,” said Janine Boire, executive director. “He is able to connect the science for people in ways that move us to action.

“Joe’s new book is beautiful and, while it was primarily designed for fifth-graders, it teaches us all that we can — and must — make a difference for the health of the Salish Sea and the living things that depend on it,” Boire said.

“Explore the Salish Sea, A Nature Guide for Kids” is intended to inspire children to explore the unique marine ecosystem that encompasses the coastal waters from Seattle’s Puget Sound up to the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Georgia Strait of British Columbia.

“I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to spend time talking about and exploring the Salish Sea with students and families in Port Townsend,” Gaydos said.

“The more time we spend learning about and interacting with this incredible body of water, the more we realize how important it is for us to not just enjoy it, but to also take care of it.”

The children’s book follows the 2015 release of “The Salish Sea, Jewel of the Pacific Northwest.” Gaydos co-authored both titles with biologist Audrey Benedict. Copies of the publications will be available for purchase in the PTMSC Gift Shop and book owners can bring their copies for an autograph.
