Maria Muldaur makes her return to Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — “American music treasure” Maria Muldaur will return to Port Angeles for a Saturday night concert at Studio Bob, 118½ E. Front St., downtown.

The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $25. They can be purchased at newupstage.com, by phone at 360-385-2216 or in the Harbor Art Gallery, 110 E. Railroad.

Although Muldaur’s most well-known for her Grammy-nominated 1974 single, “Midnight at the Oasis,” her recent nominations include Album of the Year, Blues Female Artist of the Year and the Koko Taylor award.

She grew up in Greenwich Village, N.Y.

During the folk revival of the early ’60s, Muldaur began exploring and singing early blues, bluegrass and Appalachian “old-timey” music.

She began her recording career in 1963 with the Even Dozen Jug Band. She then joined the iconic Jim Kweskin Jug Band, touring and recording with them throughout the ’60s.

Her first solo album, “Maria Muldaur,” released in 1973, contained her hit single “Midnight at the Oasis.” Later that year, she released her second album, “Waitress in a Donut Shop.”

In the 43 years since “Midnight at the Oasis,” Muldaur has toured around the world and recorded 40 albums.

Muldaur also shares in local Peninsula history.

She first appeared in Port Townsend 40 years ago at Dan Maguire’s Back Alley Tavern. Then, Mark Cole created Upstage in the Back Alley space in 1998. The Peninsula Daily News’ former music columnist, John Nelson, produced Muldaur’s first show at Upstage.

This led to Muldaur’s participation in Port Townsend’s Country Blues Festival.

Moving to Port Angeles, Upstage facilitated Muldaur’s Port Angeles appearance two years ago at “Maria Muldaur: Way Past Midnight” at Studio Bob.
