Makah artist to perform alongside musician at Burke Museum

SEATTLE — Makah artist Aaron Parker will collaborate with musician Chris Cunningham in a live performance at the Burke Museum in Seattle tonight.

The performance will be during a NifeLife event, Maker p(ART)y, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the museum at 1413 N.E. 45th St.

The evening will begin at 5:30 for Burke Museum members.

The multimedia collaboration draws inspiration from Makah masks in the Burke’s ethnology collection, using video, painting and music to offer a glimpse into the threads that bind natural, psychological and spirit worlds.

Guests will be able to see objects from the Burke’s collections and chat with experts about how makers and artists have used them to create throughout history and in modern times.

Animal skin features the creation of a large expressionist painting by Parker and a soundscape composed by Cunningham.

Both the audioscape and painting will be created live and influenced directly by a short film, also produced by the artists, that explores a contemporary expression of traditional Makah transformation masks.

Admission includes two drink tickets. A valid photo ID is required for alcoholic beverages.
