Logging history spotlighted at Port Angeles Library presentation

PORT ANGELES — A slideshow on Clallam County’s logging history is planned for 6 p.m. Thursday.

Jack Zaccardo will narrate the slideshow at the library at 2210 S. Peabody St.

“Early Logging on the Olympic Peninsula” will feature photos from the North Olympic Library System’s Kellogg Collection covering landscapes and portraits of forestry workers from the 1880s through the early 20th century.

Zaccardo is a retired state Department of Natural Resources forester from a fourth-generation timber family.

The images will be from the Bert Kellogg Collection, a collection of about 5,000 photographs that Zaccardo’s stepgrandfather donated to the library in the 1970s.

Beginning in 2012, the library began scanning the local history collection with support from grants from the Washington State Library and the federally funded Institute of Museum and Library Services, and with gifts from the Port Angeles Friends of the Library, said Sarah Morrison, librarian.

In 2017, the last photo was scanned, completing the digital collection, she said.

All photos are available to access online by clicking on “North Olympic Heritage” at www.washington ruralheritage.com or by choosing “Historic Images” from the “Online Resources” page at www.nols.org.

The North Olympic Library System oversees public libraries in Port Angeles, Sequim, Forks and Clallam Bay.
