Jefferson County venues welcome performers

CHIMACUM — As though making a sweetgrass basket, three women will braid their voices, songs and strings in a long-awaited concert this Saturday.

The band, multi-instrumentalists and vocalists Micaela Kingslight, Aimée Ringle and Samara Jade, will set up on the deck at The Keg & I, 1291 Chimacum Road, for music from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Admission to the 21-and-over show is by donation.

This is the first time the performers — now going by the name Three Wheels Turning — have played at a music venue in over a year, Kingslight said.

She’s looking forward to playing lots of originals, songs that have grown out of the three women’s styles and paths in life.

Along with guitar and mandolin, their instruments include the cajón, a box drum with Afro-Peruvian origins, while they call their music “genre-bending folk.”

The Keg & I, while only open Saturdays, has hosted open-air live music for several weeks now on its outdoor deck, as has the Finnriver Farm & Cidery, also in Chimacum, on Fridays.

Meanwhile, at the Ajax Cafe in Port Hadlock and Alchemy Bistro & Wine Bar in Port Townsend, indoor live music — all instrumental, no singing — is coming back. Trevor Hanson, a guitarist whose repertoire ranges from jazz standards to classical to bossa nova, plays at Alchemy every Monday plus the first Friday of the month from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

At Ajax, live music will reappear Fridays from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. starting May 21.

The rotation: Daniel Macke on first Fridays, Roger Ferguson second Fridays, Gerry Sherman third Fridays, Hanson on fourth Fridays and Barry Burnett on fifth Fridays.

So far, Hanson said, the atmosphere at Alchemy has been a peaceful one. The restaurant is not as full or as loud as it could get pre-2020, he said.

“The ambient noise level is low,” so the music is easier to hear.

As before, patrons especially respond to tunes such as “La Vie en Rose,” “Beyond the Sea” and the classical “Afro-Cuban Lullaby,” Hanson added.

Like Kingslight and her band, he’s grateful to be making music with and for people.

“Things are just barely trickling to a start,” Hanson said.

“Hopefully by this summer, things will be looking a lot better.”
