CLALLAM BAY — Lions Club members will be stationed at the trailhead of Little Hoko River Trail at noon on New Year’s Day to welcome participants in the First Day Walk, part of the fee-free day at state parks.
The short-level walk will be alongside the river on the northwest side of the Olympic Peninsula.
On fee-free days, visitors are not required to display a Discover Pass for day-use visits to a state park or on lands managed by the state Department of Natural Resources or state Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Other state parks on the North Olympic Peninsula are Bogachiel near Forks, Dosewallips near Brinnon, Fort Flagler on Marrowstone Island, Fort Townsend and Fort Worden in Port Townsend, Anderson Lake near Chimacum and Sequim Bay near Sequim.
Friends of Hoko River State Park and Clallam Bay Sekiu Lions volunteer to support Hoko River State Park, encompassing the Cowan Heritage Area, Hoko River Estuary and the Little Hoko River Trail.
To get there, head west through Clallam Bay and Sekiu on state Highway 112 and turn south on the Hoko-Ozette Road, pass a turn-of-century barn and farmhouse on the left, cross the Little Hoko River Bridge, and park at the trailhead on the east side of the road.
