SEQUIM — The Sequim City Band will present a night of “Stage and Screen” music beginning at 7 Saturday.
This free concert will be at the James Center for the Performing Arts in Carrie Blake Park on North Blake Avenue.
Tyler Benedict will direct the band in a musical tribute to memorable movies, Broadway blockbusters and television tunes.
Songs for young, old
Young and old alike will recognize songs from the 1939 film, “The Wizard of Oz.” Harold Arlen’s and E.Y. Harburg’s numbers include “Over the Rainbow,” “Ding Dong the Witch is Dead,” “We’re Off to See the Wizard,” “The Merry Old Land of Oz” and “If I Only Had a Brain.”
A few years later came the hit musical play “The Music Man” in 1957. Composer Meredith Wilson played in John Philip Sousa’s band and he wrote “76 Trombones” as a tribute to the march king.
In 1962, “Lawrence of Arabia” told the story of an English officer who united and led the Arab tribes in fighting the Turks during World War I.
The musical score is by Maurice Jarre.
Walt Disney’s “Mary Poppins” came out in 1964 and the Sherman Brothers music played during the tale of the magical nanny.
The band will play a medley of songs from the film, including “Feed the Birds,” “Spoonful of Sugar,” “Chim Chim Cheree,” “Step in Time” and “Supercalifragilisticexpealidocious!”
The 1965 movie “The Great Race” had an all-star cast. The pie fight was set to Henry Mancini’s “Pie in the Face Polka.” This piece features the talents of the clarinet section.
TV tunes included
Television fans will hear the band perform “Star Trek Through the Years.” Not only was this iconic music part of a long-running TV series but also featured in Paramount motion pictures.
A concert of movie music would not be complete without Academy Award-winning composer John Williams’ works. Featured will be scores from “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” “A.I./Artificial Intelligence” and “The Patriot.”
Younger audience members will enjoy music from the 2004 animated movie “The Incredibles” and Walt Disney’s 2016 computer animation film, “Moana.”
The latter tells the tale of an island teenager who sets out to save her land and people.
Guest announcer
The guest announcer for this concert is Dr. Thomas Reis, a Seattle native, who is an optometrist practicing in Port Angeles.
He is also an experienced musician, having appeared throughout Western Washington and Victoria as a featured tenor soloist. He sings with various Seattle area and North Olympic ensembles.
He serves as music coordinator and choir director at St. Joseph’s Church in Sequim.
Attendees are invited to bring lawn chairs, picnic blankets and their favorite movie popcorn.
The next performance will be Tuesday, Aug. 14, as part of the city of Sequim’s Concert in the Park series.
