Lecture planned on Christmas Bird Count tradition

PORT TOWNSEND — Friends of Fort Flagler will host a talk at 6 p.m. Thursday on the Christmas Bird Count on Marrowstone Island.

Gary Eduardo Perless, an Audubon volunteer naturalist, will tell how a holiday tradition changed from killing to counting birds.

He will share his experiences about the Christmas Bird Count on Marrowstone Island and offer tips on identifying the types of birds in the Fort Flagler area.

The program will be offered online and free to the public.

To register, send name, email and the city of residence to FortFlaglerFriends@gmail.com.

Those who register will receive the links and instructions.

The speaker, who leads walks throughout Jefferson County, has a degree in geography and has worked as a science teacher, outdoor educator and conservation promoter for a Peruvian cloud forest reserve near Machu Picchu, organizers said.
