Last weekend of Music on the Strait livestreamed

Internationally known musicians to perform

PORT ANGELES — As Music on the Strait comes to a close this weekend, the two concerts — at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday — will be livestreamed free to the public.

To access, go to www.musiconthestrait.com. Short pre-concert lectures by Lisa Bergman of Classical KING-FM also will be livestreamed at 6:15 p.m. both evenings.

For those who want to attend in person, tickets were still available as of Tuesday for Friday’s performance at Maier Hall at Peninsula College, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

The internationally known musicians poised to play Jessie Montgomery’s “Strum,” plus Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8 — known as a 20th century masterpiece — includes pianist George Li, silver medalist at the 2015 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition.

Li will appear alongside Icelandic cellist Saeunn Thorsteindottir and violinist Kyu-Young Kim of the St. Paul, Minn., Chamber Orchestra.

Port Angeles-born violinist James Garlick and Grammy-winning violist Richard O’Neill, who cofounded Music on the Strait four years ago, will join them too.

Along with O’Neill, who is from Sequim, Garlick emphasized his desire to keep this festival accessible to people of all ages. Students receive a discount when purchasing tickets at www. musiconthestrait.com. And all five festival events, last weekend and this weekend, are livestreamed from the website and from facebook.com/MusicontheStrait.

So while Saturday night’s finale concert is sold out, it will be available free to the public online.

That event, starting with Bergman’s brief talk at 6:15 p.m. and music at 7 p.m., features composer Paul Chihara and his duo for viola and violin, commissioned for Music on the Strait.

Music on the Strait is a nonprofit festival under the umbrella of the Port Angeles Symphony.
