Kozmopolis to play at Candlelight Concert series

PORT TOWNSEND — Kozmopolis, a folk music group, will play Thursday in the Candlelight Concerts series at Trinity United Methodist Church.

The performance will be at 7 p.m. for one set with no intermission at 609 Taylor St. It will be streamed live at https://trinityumcpt.org/concerts, where patrons can find a link for ways to donate. The concert will also be simulcast on KPTZ FM 91.9. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Masks are encouraged for in-person attendees.

Admission is free with a suggested donation of $15 per person. Half of the proceeds will be donated to Recovery Café, a community based on the belief that everyone deserves love and belonging and where a space exists for everyone.

Kozmopolis brings poignant and joyful sounds of Eastern European folk music to the Candlelight Concert stage, organizers said. Featuring Port Townsend couple Mark “Kozmo” Schlenz on violin and Jane Freeburg on accordion with Dan Harrison on bass, listeners can expect rousing dance beats, lyrical waltzes and evocative melodies from Ukraine, Romania, medieval Spain and originals continuing the tradition.

“We play music for the Global Village,” Schlenz said. “Jane was turned on to world music as a folk dancer in the 1970s, and I was obsessed with the world’s fiddle music when we married in 1982. We’ve been playing together ever since.”

Bassist Dan Harrison, who recently moved to the area with 12 years of performing and recording experience with the San Francisco-area Klezmer band Hernandez Hideaway, brings creative inspiration and solid grounding to the trio. A multi-talented musician and graphic artist, Harrison performed his analog modular synthesis compositions as Manys Lunch Organ at Thing in August.

Kozmopolis performed earlier this year at the Juan de Fuca Festival in Port Angeles, the Brass Screw Consortium Steampunk Festival and the Wooden Boat Festival in Port Townsend, and it headlined the Backwoods Accordion Festival in Trego, Mont.
