PORT TOWNSEND — Michael Kenney’s handmade jewelry and Gary Rainwater’s oil paintings are featured at Gallery 9 this month.

Gallery 9 is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Monday at 1012 Water St. in Port Townsend. It is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Kenney is one of the founding members of Gallery 9, the home of the North Olympic Artist Cooperative.

Michael Kenney, one of the founders of Gallery 9, will display his handmade jewelry in August.

Michael Kenney, one of the founders of Gallery 9, will display his handmade jewelry in August.

His handmade jewelry “showcases the rarity and beauty of natural stones,” organizers said in a press release.

Childhood time spent with his grandfather hunting and digging rocks sparked his interest in unusual stones, the release said.

He collects stones and cuts them himself using diamond lapidary equipment to reveal exciting colors and patterns and then creates a precious metal setting to artistically present each unique gemstone, organizers said.

His wearable art can be seen at www.michael- kenney.com as well as at Gallery 9.

Rainwater “has lived at least three lives — all at once — spanning a 22-year career as a Los Angeles fireman, building and re-building large boats and working as a painter and woodcarver,” the press release said.

“Rainwater’s array of painting themes stem from these diverse interests and includes boats, nature and rustic scenes.

“He likes to paint big and bold, in oils, with a thoughtful hand.”

His woodworking skills have been used to renovate the Danish fishing boat S.V. Ladyhawk, a six-year project to convert and fully rig her as a sailing ketch rig.

He and his wife Barbara made the Ladyhawk their home, and they sailed her from Denmark to the Pacific Nothwest.

The boat is now in Port Hadlock, in view of Port Townsend, the place that Rainwater now calls home.

His work can be seen on the Gallery 9 website at www.gallery-9.com as well as at Gallery 9.
