KCPT presents: ‘The Medicine Hat Playwright’s Festival’

PORT TOWNSEND — Key City Public Theatre is launching its 2018 teen initiative, a play written, directed, produced and acted entirely by Port Townsend youth, “The Medicine Hat Playwright’s Festival.”

The new production opened Thursday with additional shows today and July 26-28 at 7:30 p.m. at KCPT, 419 Washington St.

A pay-what-you-wish performance is slated for Thursday, July 26. Tickets are $12 for all other performances.

Initially a submission to the One Act Play Competition, where it received a staged reading as part of PlayFest 22’s TeenLab project, “The Medicine Hat Playwright’s Festival” has been developed into a full length production by playwright Ian Coates.

In the production, a playwright, Jade, finds herself kidnapped by radical Canadian nationalists who hold her hostage, hoping to get the liberal playwright to write a play for the titular festival that more reflects their vision of proper Canadian values.

“Medicine Hat” is written by Ian Coates and co-directed by Ciel Pope and Noah Morningstar.

The production features a robust cast of young actors, many of whom have been seen on KCPT’s stage in previous productions and initiatives.

Caleb Lumbard is Greg, Austin Kreig is Chuck, Jacob Pedersen is the Mountie, Mahina Gelderloos is Jade and Stevie Riepe is Dan.
