PORT TOWNSEND — The Northwind Arts Center is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a juried exhibit of 60 pieces of regional artwork and events until Aug. 26.
A reception and awards ceremony is set for 6:30 to 9 tonight at the center at 701 Water St., in Port Townsend.
Curator speaks
At 1 p.m. Saturday, juror Margaret Bullock — who chose the exhibit pieces from 344 works of art — will give a talk.
Bullock is the curator of collections and special exhibitions at the Tacoma Art Museum. She also has served as curator at the Harwood Museum of Art in Taos, N.M., and as the associate curator of American art at the Portland Art Museum in Oregon.
Her specialty is late 19th and early 20th century American art with a particular focus on art of the Pacific Northwest.
Night write
At 7 p.m. Tuesday, writers are invited to an Ekphrastic Write-In at the center.
Surrounded by the Art Port Townsend exhibit, Expressions Northwest, writers can spend some quiet time in the gallery and respond to individual works or to the show as a whole.
The host, Bill Mawhinney, will hold the space open until 8:30 p.m.
Those who can’t attend are invited to visit Northwind during regular hours — 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Tuesday — and see the show.
Writers can share their responses at 7 p.m. Aug. 23 at a public reading of works generated at the Write-In, Mawhinney said, adding that others can attend the group reading as listeners.
Ekphrastic poems begin with inspiration from another piece of art.
Artists share
At 4 p.m. Aug. 12, artist Meg Kaczyk will talk about her way of working from source materials to open creative possibilities.
At 7 p.m. Aug. 16, Kathryn Trueblood, winner of the 2013 Goldenberg Award in Fiction and the 2011 Red Hen Press Story Award, will read form her work.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 18-19 will be a tour of 47 local artists’ studios.
The self-guided tour is free.
Mapped out
Printed brochures with the art studio listings and maps will be available at the center, as well as the Visitors Center and other locations around town. A map also is available on the website, northwindarts.org/.
At 7 p.m. Aug. 24, guitarist and songwriter Dan Weber will preform with musician Matt Sircely.
Advance tickets are $12 at the Northwind Arts Center or online at Brown Paper Tickets. They will be $15 at the door.
