Jewelry, paintings, art show set for Port Townsend gallery walk

PORT TOWNSEND — Shimmering jewelry, paintings of Native Americans in Alaska and a juried art show are on tap this weekend during the Port Townsend Gallery Walk.

During the free event, which occurs the first Saturday of every month from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., art galleries and venues in the downtown waterfront district show off the work of local artists while encouraging participants to explore the many nooks and crannies of the town’s historic center.

Here’s a sampling of events:

The Port Townsend Gallery, 715 Water St., during Gallery Walk will host a reception for Jewelers Stephanie Oliveira, Addy Thornton, Andrea Guarino-Slemmons, Caroline Littlefield and Shirley Moss.

Oliveira has been working with jewelry for more than 30 years, specializing in one of a kind pieces, according to a news release. She works in silver and gold.

Thornton has been fabricating with silver for a few decades, according to the release. Her work includes dichroic glass and gemstones set in silver.

Guarino-Slemmons has been designing jewelry for more than 27 years, according to the release, and enjoys walking the local beaches and collecting stones, glass and shells.

Littlefield has been making silver jewelry since the 1970s, according to the release. She will show pendants and earrings made of Precious Metal Clay along with forged silver Celtic pins and hair pins. Her work is influenced by nature and her Celtic heritage.

Moss, “The Chainmaker,” specializes in handmade chains, according to the release. She creates every chain one link at a time, considering her work as a meditation in metal.

The work of all five jewelers will be on display throughout December.

Gallery 9, 1012 Water St., during Gallery Walk will host a meet and greet for artists Sandra Smith-Poling and Roberto Ribeiro. The works of both artists are featured at the gallery throughout the month of December.

Smith-Poling will showcase paintings of the Nuuciq Native Spirit Camp and Chenega Bay in Prince William Sound Alaska.

In addition to painting and teaching Baidarka (kayak) model making, Smith-Poling helps her husband and fellow artist teach the building of full size Baidarkas, according to a news release.

Her paintings catch the spirit of Alaska, but also in this show are images featuring Port Townsend and European inspirations that provide an important balance, according to the release.

Ribeiro, a jeweler specializing in silver, celebrates his 12th winter at Gallery 9 with his Winter White collection, a dazzling display of pearls, white topaz, cubic zirconia and sparkling silver, according to the release.

The pieces in this latest collection feature the artist’s signature spirals, curves and braids, along with stunning new, original snowflake designs, according to the release.

Ribeiro’s handwoven silver chains showcase this new selection beautifully, and embody his conviction that the finished product reflects the joy of the process, according to the release.

• Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water St., during Gallery Walk will host a reception for Small Expressions 15, a juried art show on exhibit through Jan. 2.

The show features small format art and fine crafts showcasing a range of diverse media from jewelry, painting and sculpture to ceramics, fiber, photography, printmaking and basketry from local and regional artists, according to a news release.

This show will be juried by Donna Watson, a mixed media collage artist and a signature member of the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society.

Watson has won numerous awards in national juried exhibitions, according to the release, and has taught workshops in the United States and Canada and served as juror for national and international juried exhibitions.

Watson will present a talk at Northwind Arts Center at 1 p.m. Sunday.
