Jazz trio to perform in Saturday’s Concert in the Woods

COYLE — Jazz singer, songwriter and pianist Katie Kuffel will perform with bass and drum accompaniment at Saturday’s Concert in the Woods.

The all-ages concert, with admission by donation, begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center, 923 Hazel Point Road. Complimentary cookies and coffee will be served at intermission.

The concert “will be the second appearance of Katie Kuffel in Coyle,” said Norm Johnson, organizers of the concert series.

“I often think of Katie Kuffel as our own, local version of Norah Jones. She’s a jazz pianist who has defined her own direction with original music while keeping the good parts of her years of piano training. Her music is new, yet comfortable at the same time.”

The Seattle artist will perform with Jordan Wiegert on drums and Jon Robinson on bass.

Kuffel’s first full-length album, “Pearls,” was released in October 2015 after a successful Kickstarter campaign. Her first EP, “Animal Pragmatist,” was released in 2013.

She has been featured as the musical act in the popular podcast “Welcome to Nightvale” and in PopMatters as one of the “best musical hopes to break out on 2016.”

Her lyrics tackle such concepts as femininity, mental health and the complexity of emotions.
