PORT ANGELES — Jazz vocalist Karrin Allyson, a five-time Grammy nominee, will croon in Port Angeles on Wednesday.
Allyson, 53, will perform from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Port Angeles High School Performing Arts Center, 304 E. Park Ave. The concert is presented by the Juan de Fuca Foundation.
Tickets — available online at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2586808 — are $25 for those 15 and older, and $10 for youths 14 and younger.
Allyson sings in English, French, Portuguese, Italian and Spanish, according to her biography, with the songs drawn from a variety of genres, including bossa nova, blues, bebop, samba, jazz standards, ballads and rock ‘n’ roll.
“I’ve been all around the world musically, from bop and bossa and chanson to blues and singer-songwriters,” Allyson said in her biography.
Allyson lives in New York City. She began her recording career with Concord Jazz.
She currently spends two days out of three on tour, playing major jazz festivals, concert venues and clubs of the U.S. and making repeated tours overseas to Brazil, Japan, Australia and Europe.
Allyson was born in Great Bend, Kan., and grew up in Omaha, Neb. — spending her last year of high school in San Francisco.
In her youth, Allyson studied classical piano, sang at her local church and in musical theatre, and also began songwriting, according to her biography.
Allyson attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha where she majored in classical piano and minored in French. It was during this time she developed an avid interest in jazz, performing both in a jazz swing choir in college and in her own jazz ensemble, according to her biography.
After graduating from college in 1986, Allyson moved to Minneapolis and concentrated on her jazz career.
In 1990, she moved to Kansas City, Mo., where her career took off. In 1992 she recorded her debut album, “I Didn’t Know About You.”
Five of Allyson’s albums have received Grammy nominations for Best Jazz Vocal Album: “Ballads: Remembering John Coltrane” (2001), “Footprints” (2006), “Imagina: Songs of Brasil” (2008), “‘Round Midnight” (2011), and “Many a New Day: Karrin Allyson Sings Rodgers & Hammerstein” (2015).
