PORT ANGELES — The Twelfth Annual “Jazz on the Lawn” concert will offer 90 minutes of free music on the campus of Peninsula College in Port Angeles at noon Monday.
The PC Jazz Ensemble, featuring vocalist Robbin Eaves of Joyce along with five horns and three rhythm instruments, will perform on the terraced lawn just east of the “M” building (Keegan Hall) on the college campus at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.
Appropriate COVID protocols (mostly judicious distancing from members of other households) will be in place. Vaccinations and masks are not required. The gathering is non-smoking, alcohol-free and informal, organizers said.
There is seating at the site, but audience members can bring blankets or lawn chairs if they wish. The Bookaneer Market & Deli (in J bldg.) will serve lunch items or people can bring their own food.
The band will play, as usual, a wide variety of music: compositions by Duke Ellington, Stevie Wonder, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Brown, Vincent Youmans, Average White Band will all be heard as well as two world premieres by conductor David P. Jones.
Performers are form across the North Olympic Peninsula.
From Port Angeles are Richard “Doc” Thorson (tenor sax), Jim Bradbury (trumpet/flugelhorn), Max Larsen (bass), Marge Rosen (drums), and Jones (keyboards/director).
Sequim has provided the band with Dan James (trumpet), and Jeff Dingle (trombone), while John Adams (alto sax and bass clarinet) commutes from Port Townsend.
A special guest, Kevin McCartney, will be on conga drums.
As a first-time bonus, several singers from Elaine Gardner-Morales’ Vocal Master Class have been invited to sing with a rhythm team expected to consist of Al Harris, Elaine Gardner-Morales, Marge Rosen and Bonnie Booth).
Featured singers include Tess Teel, Sophia Doherty, Janet Lucas, Signe Crawford, Evelyn Leigh and Cheryl Bell.
The vocal selections will include music by Billy Strayhorn, Romberg/Hammerstein, Rodgers/Hart, Isham Jones, The Atlanta Rhythm Section, Green Day, Kurt Weill, and the Eurythmics.
If the skies suddenly cloud up and it looks like more than a few drops of rain, the cafeteria area inside the PUB (just north of the lawn) will be the alternative venue.
