PORT ANGELES — The public is invited to bring a lunch or grab a cup of coffee for “Jazz at the PUB” at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Pirate Union Building at Peninsula College.
Billed as “a great way to encounter jazz” by Director David P. Jones, students and the public are invited to stop by and enjoy the music free of charge at the building at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.
Joyce’s Robbin Eaves, in a tribute to Michel Legrand, will sing the Oscar-nominated song, “You Must Believe in Spring” as well as one of Sting’s lesser known songs from 1987, “Fragile.”
Olga Palenga of Port Angeles will sing the Oscar-winning “The Shadow of Your Smile” by Johnny Mandel.
She also will perform Bob Dorough’s “Devil May Care.”
Stepping out of the trumpet section for a bit, Scott Sizer will take a couple of turns at the vocalists’ microphone with the popular Schwartz & Dietz swinger, “You and the Night and the Music” and Count Basie’s lesser known ballad, “Blue and Sentimental.”
The 17-piece, full big-band complement PC Jazz Ensemble will add instrumentals written by Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie, George Gershwin, Nat Adderley, Oliver Nelson, Pat Metheny, John Scofield and Stevie Wonder.
“One-third of our horn section is either new to the band this year or returning from a long absence,” Jones said.
“It is larger and more orthodox than bands of late, but every bit as thrilling. And we have Craig Buhler, saxophonist extraordinaire, onboard, too.”
Performers in the band are all from the North Olympic Peninsula.
From Port Angeles are Palenga (piano), Bob Bailey (alto sax), Richard “Doc” Thorson (tenor sax), Ken Lorentzen (trumpet), Mike Ehre (trumpet), WesLee Laughman (trumpet), and Jones (keyboards/director).
From Sequim are Buhler (tenor sax/flute), Jeff Dingle (trombone), Bonnie Booth (trombone), Elaine Gardner-Morales (bass) and Nicia Pfeffer (drums).
Representing Port Townsend are John Adams (alto sax/bass clarinet), Lorenzo Jones (bari sax) and Sizer (trumpet).
Ron Daylo (trombone) comes from Port Ludlow and drummer Tor Brandes makes the trek all the way from the Brinnon area.
