Jazz concert a side dish for lunchtime Tuesday

PORT ANGELES — Peninsula College will celebrate “Jazz at the PUB” with a concert at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Pirate Union Building.

Audience members are invited to bring a lunch, buy lunch at the Pirate Cove on campus, study or just listen. The event is free and open to the public in the PUB, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

Robbin Eaves of Joyce will perform tunes associated with Nat King Cole, Michael Bublé and Jackie DeShannon.

The 18-piece PC Jazz Ensemble will play music by John Coltrane, Kenny Barron, Chick Corea, Grant Green, Eddie Harris and others. Two recent compositions by David P. Jones, Jazz Ensemble conductor, will also be heard.

The group is a full jazz big band consisting of violin, five saxophones, three trumpets, four trombones and rhythm, and the various arrangements take full advantage of the many possible colors of jazz.

“The performers represent some of the very best jazz that the North Olympic Peninsula has to offer,” organizers said.

They include Port Angeles’ Bob Bailey (alto sax), Andy Geiger (tenor sax), Richard “Doc” Thorson (tenor sax), Joel Ricci (trumpet), Jordan Nicolas (trumpet), WesLee Laughman (trumpet), Clare Wegener (baritone horn), Ron Daylo (trombone), Tyler Benedict (bass trombone), Olga Palenga (piano) and Jones (keyboards/director).

Representing Sequim are Kate Powers (electric violin), Bonnie Booth (trombone) and Nicia Pfeffer (drums).

From Port Townsend are John Adams (alto/soprano saxes) and Lorenzo Jones (baritone sax).

Bassist John Sanders hails from Quilcene, and drummer Tor Brandes joins the group all the way from Neah Bay.

The musical styles range from standards of the 1940s and ’50s through post-bop/modern jazz (“Lady Bird” and “Voyage”) to an early jazz/fusion classic (“Cold Duck Time”) and some fun Latin barnburners.
