Jazz at the PUB open to all on Tuesday

PORT ANGELES — Jazz at the PUB is open and free to all at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the PUB (“J” Bldg.) on the campus of Peninsula College.

The series on the Port Angeles campus at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd. is an informal chance to hear the Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble under the direction of David P. Jones.

“A great way to encounter jazz … it provides a chance for PC faculty, administrators, and staff to take a break from their busy day with live jazz as the attraction. And, of course, the NOP community is always welcome,” according to a press release.

“Bring your own lunch or get coffee, sandwiches, snacks, etc. at the PC Café.”

The concert features Robbin Eaves of Joyce on vocals and a 14-piece jazz band. This is one of the largest bands the college has fielded since before COVID with five woodwinds and six brass and a full rhythm section featuring the drumming of Terry Smith.

The band will perform music from the repertoire of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Woody Herman, Jerome Kern, George Gershwin, Joe Zawinul, Eddie Harris, Weather Report, Giacomo Rossini and three world premieres by the director, Jones.

Robbin, accompanied by a smaller version of the band, will sing Joe Zawinul’s classic, “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” as well as tunes by Rodgers & Hart and Van Heusen & Burke.

Performers are from across the North Olympic Peninsula. From Port Angeles is Kevin MacCartney (tenor sax), Jim Bradbury (trumpet), Joel Ricci (trumpet), Ken Young (trombone) and Jones (keyboards/director). From Sequim are Jayne Morrison (alto/soprano sax), Anton Hilmisson (alto/baritone sax), Jeff Fox (tenor sax), Dan James (trumpet), Tom Hartig (trombone), Terry Smith (drums) and Kendall Melton (bass), while John Adams (alto sax + clarinet + bass clarinet) hails from Port Townsend and Dan Powell (trombone) makes the twice-weekly trek from Marrowstone Island.

Vaccinations, masking and social distancing are not required to attend the performance, but the college supports efforts to keep employees and guests safe.
