Jazz at the PUB offers indoor concert

PORT ANGELES — The 12-piece Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble will present its first indoor concert in nearly two years with Jazz in the PUB on Tuesday.

“Our Jazz on the Lawn concert, back in August, drew over 80 of our loyal jazz fans, and the performers appreciated that so much,” said Ensemble Director David P. Jones.

“This is basically the same band that played that show, but with completely different music.”

The free performance will begin at 12:30 p.m. in the PUB — building J — at the Port Angeles campus at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

The series is an informal chance to hear the Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble under Jones’ direction.

“This a great way to encounter jazz,” Jones said. “It provides a chance for PC faculty, administrators and staff to take a break from their busy day with live jazz as the attraction. And, of course, the community is always welcome.”

The 12-piece ensemble will play music by Thelonious Monk, Maynard Ferguson, Jimmy Van Heusen, Elmo Hope, Milt Jackson, Ray Bryant, Mike Dana and two world premieres by Jones.

These compositions range from 1939-2020 and cover a variety of styles from swing to rock.

The performers in this band are from across the North Olympic Peninsula.

From Port Angeles are Richard “Doc” Thorson (tenor sax), Ken Young (trumpet), Aiden Gale (trombone), Marge Rosen (drum set), Kendall Melton (bass), Max Larsen (bass) and David Jones (keyboards/director).

From Sequim are Andy Geiger (alto and tenor sax), Jim Bradbury (trumpet), Jeff Dingle (trombone), Steve Burdick (trombone), and Elaine Gardner-Morales (bass).

John Adams (alto sax and bass clarinet) hails from Port Townsend.

Attendance will be limited to a maximum of 40 guests in the concert area due to COVID-19 safety protocols, with no exceptions. Masks must be worn at all times while in the building.

Attendees are asked to provide space between households in the seating area.

They will not be asked to provide proof of vaccination for the concert.

College staff will be present at the event to help with spacing requirements and to answer questions about the protocols.

At this time, no eating or drinking will be allowed in the PUB.

The market and deli serve take out only.
