Jazz and funk featured in Sunday concert at Rainshadow Recording

PORT TOWNSEND — The Jessica Lurie Ensemble will perform its renditions of funk, jazz, folk and ethnic melodies at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Rainshadow Recording at Fort Worden.

Doors will open at 7 p.m. at the studio at 200 Battery Way.

Tickets are $15 at https://jessicalurie.brown papertickets.com.

Lurie will be joined by a band that includes her long-time collaborator and recording co-producer Todd Sickafoose on acoustic bass (Ani DiFranco, Tiny Resistors); New York and Los Angeles-based Swiss drummer Mathias Kunzli (Regina Spektor); and local funk, jazz and experimental jam guitarist Andy Coe.

She will perform a diverse set, featuring new compositions and works from her new CD release “Long Haul,” coming out on Chant Records in New York this month and in January on Lurie’s own label, Zipa Music.

Lurie emerged from the Seattle 1990s explosion of jazz, rock and improvisational music.

An award-winning multi-instrumentalist, composer and improviser, Lurie performs on saxophones, flute, electronics and voice, exploring a wide range of musical influences from around the globe as a composer and performer, including folk, funk, rhythmic Eastern European folk music and improvisation-heavy jazz.

She is known around Seattle for her recurring collaborations in Seattle’s jazz, experimental and jam scene, as well as being a founding member of the Tiptons Saxophone Quartet and the Living Daylights trio.
