PORT TOWNSEND — November’s featured artists at the Port Townsend Gallery are Tom Saknit and Martha Collins.

Collins has explored the matrix of interaction between exotic and domestic woods and dyed maple veneer for 45 years, the gallery said in a press release.

She uses a 100-step process of lamination, band saw slicing and lathe turning to create works of art and wearables with up to 1,000 pieces in them.

Complex patterns of natural wood tones are accented by hand-dyed veneers.

“Many of her bracelets and spirit bowls have the appearance of intricate basketry, needlepoint or bead work,” according to the press release.

Her current projects include necklaces and small boxes.

Saknit’s Redacted PhotographyTM “Remembering Venice” is featured.

His work explores a different side of photography, “an imaginary moment out of which photographs are grown not captured,” the press release said.

The art form generally begins with a recognizable image. Then photographers add more — more range. saturation and contrast.

Saknit asked himself, “What would happen if I went the other direction? What happens if I went less?”

The photographs have the look of a pen in ink illustration.

“Ultimately the dialogue between the artist removing and the viewer filling in the gaps becomes an exercise challenging one’s perception of memory,” the press release said.

The Port Townsend Gallery, 715 Water St., is open from noon to 5 p.m. Fridays through Sundays, as well as by appointment.
