Internationally-known college orchestra to perform in Port Angeles

St. Olaf repertoire to include Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 Pathétique

PORT ANGELES — The St. Olaf Orchestra, conducted by Chung Park. will perform at Port Angeles High School in Port Angeles at 7 tonight.

The concert at the high school at 304 E. Park Ave., is part of the orchestra’s 2022 tour across Washington and Oregon and is the inaugural tour for the conductor.

The concert is free for all students and $10 for adults. Tickets may be purchased at stolaf.edu/tickets.

Highlights of the program include Symphony No. 1 in G Major by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, standout soloists from the ranks of the St. Olaf Orchestra, and Tchaikovsky’s gripping and poignant Symphony No. 6 Pathétique.

Several orchestra members are from the Western Washington area: Ann Li (violin) and Ella Cereghino (viola) of Olympia, Tarkel Price (trombone) of Seattle, Owen Cromwell (violin) of Mukilteo, and Ariana Raduege (cello) of Bellingham.

“We are incredibly excited to take the distinguished St. Olaf Orchestra to the beautiful Pacific Northwest, where we have so many friends and deep connections,” said Park, who was the conductor and professor of viola at the University of Central Florida before joining the faculty at St. Olaf earlier this year.

“We are proud to represent not just the orchestra but the music department and the entire college through our excellence and love for music making.”

Park succeeds Steven Amundson who conducted the ensemble for 41 years. Park also teaches violin and viola lessons, private conducting lessons and seminars, and conducting classes.

The St. Olaf Orchestra was recently named the winner of the 2018/2019 American Prize for Orchestra Performance among colleges and universities for the second time.

In 2019, the St. Olaf Orchestra made its Carnegie Hall debut, performing with world-renowned violinist Sarah Chang.

In addition to performing throughout the United States, the orchestra has been broadcast on PBS and public radio stations nationwide as part of the St. Olaf Christmas Festival.

The St. Olaf Orchestra has toured internationally in Austria, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Switzerland, Spain, China, Uruguay, and Argentina. Most recently, it traveled to Norway in the spring of 2019 on a joint tour with the St. Olaf Choir.

Its Pacific Northwest tour also includes performances in Bellingham, Portland, Olympia, Bremerton and Seattle.
